Hellas Verona are rapidly seeing their hopes of avoiding a straight return to Serie B disappear with each negative result, and the Gialloblu will be desperate to arrest their downward slide as they take on Bologna on Monday evening.

With just six points from their first 12 games, they are only propped up by Benevento, who have yet to win a game in their debut top-flight campaign. The hosts have lost four in a row and will welcome the Rossoblu, who also have lost four in a row and will be equally desperate to turn things around.

Despite this, Bologna had made a solid start, including holding Inter to a 1-1 draw. They aren’t the highest scoring side, especially not in their travels, but the Rossoblu are grinding out results. Having suffered a 3-2 reversal to Crotone, they certainly will be loath to allow another lower-ranked side to nick points off them, especially as these are the kind of matches that could prove decisive later on in the season among the teams who will be battling the drop.

Interestingly, all of Bologna’s away matches have been decided by one goal – whether they win or lose. Their three road fixtures – against the likes of Genoa, Sassuolo, and Benevento – were all 1-0 results, which shows a tendency to hunker down behind the ball as opposed to pouring forward.

With Verona winning just one game all season – against bottom-ranked Benevento – Bologna will be fancying their chances.

Bologna’s three road wins have been by 1-0 results, and so it’s likely they will adopt the same approach. Playing it safe seems to be the order of business for the Rossoblu, as they only beat Benevento by a goal despite Le Streghe sitting bottom of the table.

Verona have won just one game so far this season, and that was hardly a convincing result against Benevento.

Still, the international break could have them revitalized and these are the kind of games that Verona realistically have a shot at, although it won’t be easy, especially given their bad record against Bologna. Meanwhile, their opponents will be certainly happy with a draw, although as the game wears on they may push a bit more to secure all three points.
